Trouble prevention

Please be careful of "unscrupulous business practices"!

There has been a rise in fraudulent "unscrupulous business practices" targeting students. These "unscrupulous business practices" take advantage of students' lack of social experience, making them think they can "make money easily," and sometimes even using blackmail-like tactics to lure them in.
They are constantly targeting people using various methods whenever they get the chance.
New, ingenious sales methods such as those listed below are also emerging, so please be careful of "good deals" and "easy money" offers.

Be careful, don't be fooled by good deals!

There has been an increase in fraudulent business practices targeting students, using clever methods to sell expensive products and cheat money. Below are some typical cases, so please be careful.

Beware of "Please participate in a survey" (Catch-sales)

There are vendors who approach people on the streets, claiming to be conducting a survey, with the intention of selling them high-priced items.

* Be firm and do not accept invitations from people you don't know.

Multilevel marketing and pseudo-multilevel marketing (chain sales)

Also known as network marketing, there are many cases of people being lured in by acquaintances or friends with promises of "a great money-making opportunity" or "a fun club to join," and then making expensive purchases that result in huge debts, or trying to recruit their friends and damaging important relationships.

Appointment Sales

There have been cases of fraudsters calling people to sales offices with enticing offers, such as "You've been the only one chosen" or "You've won a prize," and trying to sell them expensive products or coupons or get them to sign contracts.

Dating Scams

It is a business method in which a person uses eloquent speech to induce affection in the opposite sex during solicitation, and then exploits this to sell products, etc. In some cases, the person may be exploited to prevent the cooling off period (unconditional cancellation) of the contract.

Fictitious/unjustified claims

We have received inquiries about people receiving documents via e-mail, postcard, envelope, or telegram requesting payment for fictitious items such as fees for paid TV program sites, administrative fees for dating introduction businesses, consumption fees specified by the Civil Code, and debts that they have no recollection of using.
Recently, there have been cases of scammers using names that closely resemble those of real public institutions, accepting lawsuits, abusing systems that are not widely known, such as payment reminders and digital broadcasting, and charging membership fees for adult-related products that were not purchased. In all cases, these are extremely malicious tactics that stir up consumer anxiety and exploit the psychology of not wanting to get involved in trouble in order to obtain money. To avoid getting involved, it is important to never contact them.

One-click fraud

We have received many inquiries about being billed for usage fees, etc., from fictitious sites or sites that have only been accessed once, using e-mail, telephone, postcards, etc. Among these, the number of charges is particularly high via mobile phone e-mail, and the number of inquiries about this new method is rapidly increasing.

How to stay out of trouble

To avoid getting into trouble, keep the following in mind:

  1. Think carefully about whether you really need it!
  2. The key is to have the courage to say "No thanks"!
  3. There's a catch to every good deal!
  4. Don't ever let your pockets slip away!
  5. Credit is debt! Be careful not to use it carelessly!
  6. Don't stamp your seal! Don't pay any money! Consult with your family (friends) first!
  7. Don't be a guarantor for someone else!
  8. Read the contract carefully and keep it safe!
  9. A fake university staff member tells the name of a university staff member to find out the truth!
  10. If you lie and invite your friends, you will be punished!
  11. If you suspect something is wrong, contact your nearest help desk!

Use of the "cooling off" period

Be aware that there is a "cooling off period"

If you should happen to fall victim to such fraudulent business practices, please do not suffer alone but come to Student Support Division for advice. You can also get good advice from your nearest consumer affairs center. It is also a good idea to know that there is a "cooling off period" during which you can cancel the contract unconditionally without paying a penalty.

"Cooling off" system

This is a system that allows you to cancel unconditionally within 8 days (20 days for multilevel marketing) for products and services specified in the "Act on Specified Commercial Transactions" (commonly known as the Specified Commercial Transactions Act) if you purchase through door-to-door sales. If you wish to exercise the cooling-off period, you must do so in writing and send it by "content-certified mail" so that evidence is left. If you use a postcard, please send it by registered mail.

Stay Away from Student Loans and Credit Cards

Beware of student loans!

Some people seem to take out so-called "student loans" without much thought because the application process is simple, but even the smallest debts can snowball due to the high interest rates.
In order to repay the debt, students are forced to take out other loans, and before they know it, they are faced with huge repayments, which have a serious impact on not only their student life but also the life of their family.
Since you can easily borrow books with just your student ID card, if you lose it, it may be misused.
Please be careful not to lose your student ID card.

Be careful when using credit cards!

While credit cards are convenient, there is a danger that the importance of the product will be diluted because you are not paying with cash. Even when buying expensive products or services, credit is convenient because you do not have to pay immediately. However, you must remember that you will always have to pay later.
Credit is still a debt. If you end up paying a lot of money back, it could ruin your life, so be careful when using credit cards.

Preventing drug abuse (warning)

Drug abuse is scary! Absolutely not!

Drug abuse not only harms the body and life of the abuser, but also has unimaginable effects, such as causing the loss of friends and family and destroying homes.
Students, please be extremely careful of the sweet allure and sweet traps of drug abuse, and understand the seriousness of the matter and have the courage to refuse even if you are tempted. Never get involved with drugs, so as not to ruin your life.
Our university will take strict measures against such illegal behavior.
For further details, please visit the "No. Absolutely Not" Promotional Campaign website of the National Center for the Prevention of Narcotic and Stimulant Drug Abuse.

Protect copyright

On the Internet, the development of broadband environments such as ADSL, CATV, and FTTH, the emergence of software suited to Internet use, and its ease of use have all combined to make it relatively easy to use music, videos, images, etc. However, even though the Internet is easy to use, severe penalties are imposed if you do not follow the law. In order to use the Internet in a healthy manner, we will introduce matters related to copyright infringement of music, videos, images, etc.

*Music can be made available for download on a website created by an individual or company, or can be played as background music.
* Making it possible to download software that is believed to be infringing copyright by using P2P file sharing software, etc.
* Using P2P file-sharing software, etc. to download material that appears to be infringing copyright.
*Unauthorized use of game or anime characters.
*Unauthorized use of portrait rights.
*Using images etc. posted on other people's websites without permission.
The Copyright Act states that such copyright infringements shall be punished with "imprisonment for not more than five years or a fine of not more than five million yen, or both."
